Unbiased AGN Roots Grass Fed Whey Protein Review

In this unbiased AGN Roots Grass Fed Whey Protein review, I will examine whether a container is worth your money. Don’t worry—this wasn’t a freebie; I purchased my container with my money.

I’ve meticulously examined numerous grass-fed protein powders on this website. However, almost 95% of those grass-fed protein powders are just claims. Most protein powder companies are hoping that YOU don’t do the research and examine their far-fetched claims of grass-fed.

They also hope you don’t examine the amino acid profile of their protein powder to catch them in a little white lie.  Does AGN Roots fall into the territory of claim or truly grass-fed?

Let us get into this AGN Roots Grass Fed Whey Protein review.

🏋️‍♂️ Is AGN Roots Whey Protein Isolate a Meal Replacement or Post Workout Shake?

AGN Roots Whey Protein Isolate doesn’t provide specific directions on the proper use of the product if we are making a judgment based on what the scientific literature suggests.

AGN Roots Whey Protein Isolate is best used as a pre-, post-, or anytime shake. Isolate is the primary protein source. Research suggests that fast-digesting proteins will be fully digested based on 10 grams of protein per hour.

This study examines how long it takes for fast-digesting protein, whey protein isolate, to be emptied from the stomach. Whey protein isolate may be digested within 30 to 45 minutes of drinking.

💪 How Much AGN Roots Grass Fed Whey to Maximize Muscle Growth

Research suggests you should aim for 25 grams of protein with up to 3 grams of naturally occurring leucine in your post-workout protein powder.

AGN Roots offers the following per serving: 25 grams of protein with 3.05 grams of leucine per 29g scoop.

You only need 2 AGN Roots Grass Fed Whey scoops to stimulate muscle protein synthesis.

🛒 Where To Buy AGN Roots Grass Fed Whey

You can purchase AGN Roots Grass Fed Whey directly from AGN or Amazon. I purchased my container directly from Amazon.

Direct from AGN Roots

47 servings, $62.00, $1.32 per serving (S&S: $55.80, $1.19)

Shipping and handling is a flat rate of $5. However, if you live internationally or outside the continental US, you may have to pay more for S&H.  Furthermore, S&H is not accessible if you sign up for Subscribe & Save.

Direct from Amazon

15 servings, $27.99, $1.87 per serving (no S&S)
47 servings, $66.49, $1.41 per serving (S&S: $66.49, $1.41)

When you account for S&H, and if you’re an Amazon Prime Member, it’s cheaper to purchase directly from Amazon. If you want to hit the savings button and meet the Amazon S&S threshold, the opportunity to save 10% is there.

That 10% savings comparison is $1.27 per serving through Amazon versus $1.29 per serving through AGN Roots (adding the $5 S&H to the S&S base price).

💸 Does AGN Roots Grass Fed Whey Offer A Money-Back Guarantee

As shared in AGN Roots ‘Returns & Exchanges’ page:

We are deeply committed to delivering a high-quality product and championing a greener path to sourcing nutrition. Should you feel discontent with your purchase, please get in touch with us at CustomerService@agnroots.com and detail your experience. We are here to assist and find a resolution.

Value: 10 out of 10. I purchased the 15-serving container through Amazon for this review. However, if you want your most significant savings without the headaches of quality products through Amazon for their S&S program, purchase directly from AGN Roots.

It is annoying that you are paying for S&H through the AGN Roots S&S program. I know, minor nitpick.

⚛️ Is AGN Roots Grass Fed Whey Amino Spiked?

agn roots grass fed whey protein review
The amino acid profile and protein are from truly grass-fed cows.

AGN Roots Grass Fed Whey Protein is not amino spiked. How do I know?

Well, the amino acid profile is listed on the package. Per 29-gram serving, you get the following amount of BCAAs per serving.

  • Leucine 3.05 grams
  • Isoleucine 1.94 grams
  • Valine 1.54 grams

This comes to a total BCAA count of 6.53 grams per serving.

Furthermore, to help assure that AGN Roots Grass Fed Whey is not amino spiked. It’s been 3rd party tested and certified by Informed Choice with their Informed Protein badge.

I’ll discuss Informed Protein and other certifications more shortly.

🐄 What Does Grass Fed Whey Protein Mean?

Numerous protein powders have the “grass-fed” statement on their labels. However, after a thorough analysis, we found that some of these protein powders are not grass-fed.

AGN Roots Grass Fed Whey has the “Truly Grass-Fed” badge shared on the bag. That means specific guidelines and standards have been met and exceeded to earn the badge. I’ll discuss more on that shortly.

If you’re wondering more about grass-fed protein powder claims, AGN Roots offers an excellent resource on assessing if a protein powder is grass-fed titled, “Grass-Fed Whey Contains More BCAAs.”

This article helped me determine which protein powders are grass-fed if the “Truly Grass-Fed” badge is not listed. If you’re wondering which protein powders have the “grass-fed” claim but are not grass-fed.

Here’s my list of protein powders I’ve reviewed and are not grass-fed.

If you’re wondering why the FDA has not stepped in, do something about these label claims. Label claims and standards are not set. Hence, protein companies place “grass-fed” without offering grass-fed protein powder.

If you want more information, AGN Roots has another fantastic article, “Common food label claims – explained,”

🔍 How To Tell If Your Protein Powder Is Grass Fed?

If you’re looking for a genuine certification badge for a truly grass-fed protein powder, you must look for specific badges on the bag and at the place where the protein is imported.

  • The no-headaches approach is to look for the “Truly Grass-Fed” badge.
  • You need to examine where the protein powder is imported
    • New Zealand & Irish Whey are signs of high quality
  • Finally, you need to examine the amino acid profile

“Grass-Fed Whey Contains More BCAAs,” is a fantastic resource. You must have the amino acid profile for the protein powder you want to inspect. Then, identify the number of BCAAs per serving.

AGN Roots breaks down the number of BCAAs per 25 grams of protein and the conditions and diet of dairy cows. Some protein powders, like Clean Simple Eats, offer New Zealand-style protein.

However, applying AGN Roots grading criteria, Clean Simple Eats protein powder is from an average distributor in New Zealand. If you want a more in-depth examination of their grass-fed protein quality, check out my article, “Is Clean Simple Eats Worth It?”

📜 Is AGN Roots Grass Fed Whey 3rd party tested?

agn roots grass fed whey protein review

AGN Roots went all out and paid for certifications and customer peace of mind to confirm and reassure you that you are purchasing one of the highest-quality protein powders on the market. Here are the certifications AGN Roots Grass Fed Whey advertises on each bag

  • Truly Grass-Fed
  • Animal Welfare Approved
  • Informed Sport
  • Informed Protein

Let’s examine each of the certifications to clarify what each one means.

🌿 Truly Grass-Fed

agn roots grass fed whey protein review
These are the prominent certification badges on every AGN Roots Whey Protein bag.

The Truly Grass-Fed badge means that dairy cows are the following

  • Cows are fed 95% grass
  • Cows spend 250 days outdoors
  • Cows are not injected with hormones to boost milk production
  • Antibiotic-free, sick cow’s milk is removed from milk production until healthy
  • Non-GMO project certified
  • Environmentally responsible

One last bit of information about Irish dairy products. AGN Roots only purchases milk from Irish dairy farmers, Bord Bia SDAS. That means

A national certification program established by the food board of the Irish government that ensure that farmers adhere to the best practices in animal welfare, sustainability, product quality, traceability and soil and grassland management.

🐄😊 Animal Welfare Approved

Here is a direct quote about the Animal Welfare Approved certification.

Certified Animal Welfare Approved by AGW is the only label that guarantees animals are raised outdoors on pasture or range for their entire lives on an independent farm using truly sustainable, high-welfare farming practices.

Dairy cows used by AGN Roots spend their entire life raised outdoors. They are not kept in close quarters and can roam free.

🏅 Informed Sport and Informed Protein

You may be familiar with Informed Choice third-party certifications. They are the certification in the supplementation industry. Each badge issued by Informed Choice means something a little different.

Informed Sport

Simply put, each batch of AGN Roots Grass Fed Whey is tested for illegal and banned substances. Visit this link to see all 410 brands with the Informed Sport badge.

Informed Protein

For the unaware, amino spiking is commonly used in protein powders. Amino spiking is a practice where the protein company artificially inflates its powder’s protein content.

About Informed Protein and AGN Roots Grass Fed Whey, the listed amount of 25 grams of protein is verified and certified to be free of any artificial spiked-free ingredients. Here’s a list of certified protein brands as of June 2024.

If you’re wondering which protein powders artificially inflate their powder, I have a limited list of protein powders I’ve reviewed with solid evidence of protein spiking.

Amino Spiking: 10 out of 10. There is no question that AGN Roots opened its pockets to get its protein powder certified. It is an industry-leading, 6.53 grams of BCAAs per 25 grams of protein.

🥤 What’s The Mixing Directions for AGN Grass Fed Whey

agn roots grass fed whey protein review
The Customer FAQ for AGN Roots is fascinating. Plus, it’s overly specific and detailed.

It’s a very odd choice for AGN Roots and their mixing directions. It’s not listed on the package, and you have to scan a QR code to get directions.

However, in a novel twist, the QR code will direct you to the following: storage, mixing, lab testing results, nutrient composition, and frequently asked questions.

Nonetheless, here are the mixing directions for AGN Grass Fed Whey

  • Start with water at room temperature
  • Increase the stir rate of the water
  • Slow the rate of adding protein down

AGN Roots goes a step further: add the liquid first. Then, to avoid the clumping phenomenon, slowly mix in the whey parts at a time.

To avoid clumping, increase the amount of energy or time spent mixing.

I used eight ounces of water with two scoops in my shaker.

🔥 Mixing Protein Powder With Hot Water

AGN Roots has directions for hot liquids if you like mixing protein powder with a hot beverage, such as tea, coffee, cocoa, soup, etc.

  1. Take a small batch off to the side of the liquid and let it reach equilibrium with the ambient room temperature.
  2. Add your desired protein
  3. Mix thoroughly into this small batch to create a homogenous paste

“Following the above steps will ensure consistent water activity with the least energy across the whey. The resulting paste allows adding more water, which can easily follow suit and dilute the solution further.”

⚖️ Does AGN Grass Fed Whey Come With A Scoop

agn roots grass fed whey protein review

Yes, AGN Grass Fed Whey comes with a scoop. However, this gives you a peek at the quality assurance when examining the FAQ, “Missing Scoop.” One 43cc scoop is in the pouch. Each pouch of AGN Grass Fed Whey is hand-filled, and mistakes happen.

Full disclosure: AGN Roots shares, “We do not have the infrastructure to pick, pack, ship, and import a single scoop to you.” AGN Roots went the extra 10 miles and provides a list of equivalent household measuring devices to ensure that you get an equal serving.

Shakability Test: 9.5 out of 10. I put minimal effort into my shaker and ended up with small patches of clumps. As I shared, I’m nitpicking.

📋 What’s the Ingredient List for AGN Grass Fed Whey?

The ingredient list for AGN Grass Fed Whey is as follows, with a brief description.

IngredientDescription
Truly grass-fed Irish whey protein isolate (milk)High-quality protein sourced from grass-fed cows in Ireland, ensuring natural and sustainable farming practices.
Non-GMO Lecithin (sunflower)A natural emulsifier derived from non-genetically modified sunflower seeds, aiding in the smooth mixing of the protein powder.

As you know, AGN Grass Fed Whey is an imported Irish whey protein isolate. Another nice touch is clarification and the use of a NON-GMO emulsifier.

Speaking personally, the use of either GMO or soy causes GI issues. Consuming lactose is difficult enough. But it’s a nice reassurance and touch to clarify the ingredients used.

Suppose you’re a protein nerd and want to know the protein quality used in AGN Roots Grass Fed Whey. The protein content is approximately 93% protein by weight before drying.

🌍 Is AGN Roots Grass Fed Whey Made in the USA?

AGN Roots shares that the protein is imported from an Irish dairy. And their product meets all cGMP standards.

Ingredients List: 10 out of 10. Minimal ingredients and AGN Roots accomplishes everything they wanted with their Grass Fed Whey.

You won’t find anything unusual for ingredients or nutrition facts.

🍗 How Much Protein Does AGN Roots Grass Fed Whey Have Per Serving?

The percent of protein offered is calculated by taking the protein serving divided by serving size.

25 grams of protein / 29 gram serving = 86% protein per serving

🍨 Is AGN Grass Fed Whey Lactose Free?

AGN Roots shares that their Grass Fed Whey “contains very little lactose and fits within the FDA classification of ‘Reduced Lactose’ rather than ‘Lactose-Free.’”

If you’re looking for a gluten-free label, AGN Grass Fed Whey shares a formulation that does not contain gluten. However, no small print sharing “made in an environment with cross contaminants.”

Nutrition Facts: 8.5 out of 10. This score is based on the percent protein per serving.

👌 Does Unflavored Protein Powder Have A Taste?

The best way to describe AGN Grass Fed Whey unflavored protein is a mild, nutty, dairy cream flavor.

I didn’t start drinking unflavored protein powder until I reviewed Pure Choice Farms Cold Filter Isolate.  Their unflavored protein and AGN Roots Grass Fed Whey spot-on share the same flavor profile, which is nutty.

You don’t need to acquire a different flavor pallet to drink unflavored protein. All I’m sharing is the unflavored flavor is as advertised.

Personally, drinking unflavored protein is the best option if you’re trying to minimize artificial sugars, fillers, and creams.

⭐️ What do Amazon Reviewers Say About AGN Roots Grass Fed Whey?

agn roots grass fed whey protein review
There is a reason why a QR code is used with AGN Roots Whey Isolate. There is a lot of information and questions.

Based on 531 reviews, AGN Roots has a 4.5 out of 5-star review. Here is what the negative 1% had to share

  • One critic criticized the owner as an oil tycoon, adding that they no longer trust the brand or any of the claims made on the bag.
  • There have been numerous complaints of receiving a rancid product and quality control.
  • Many reviewers shared that their protein bags were opened upon delivery.

Most of the negative reviews come from the hand-filling production of AGN Grass Fed Whey. It’s very possible that issues of quality control and non-sterile facility came into play while manufacturing this protein powder.

In contrast, 80% of the positive comments are five stars. All the reviews shared the same characteristics: high quality, easy to mix, and no harmful additives, artificial sugars, or ingredients.

Flavor: Unflavored. Here is what is excellent about unflavored protein powders: you know you are not getting any extra “stuff” with your protein powder. Plus, almost the majority of the protein powder is protein powder.

I don’t provide a score for unflavored protein powders.

🏁 AGN Roots Grass Fed Whey Protein Review: Final Thoughts

Let us conclude this AGN Roots Grass Fed Whey Protein review and ask if it is good. As always, starting with the cons

  • Pricey
  • Not enough sizing options
  • Limited flavor options

These are all super-specific critiques. I would love more flavor options. If AGN Roots is creating a product that offers a proper zero filler, no sweetener, and no GMO protein powder, they need to limit the flavor to unflavored.

Finally, I understand why it’s pricey. Nowadays, paying money for a high-quality supplement that is 3rd party certified, verified, and qualified for the ingredients and pledge for environmentally friendly is difficult.

My only real knock is the quality assurance of AGN Roots Grass Fed Whey. Multiple reviewers who left negative reviews shared quality issues with their purchase, including open protein bags, rotten smell, and mold. I did not have that issue. However, it does raise a level of concern about their quality assurance.

But isn’t that what the price of admission for a high-quality protein powder is about?

  • 3rd party certified by multiple 3rd party agencies
  • Protein content verified and certified to be free of banned substances and amino spiking
  • The dairy cow’s entire life is spent on a pasture
  • Cows are free from treated antibiotics and hormones to increase milk product
  • Transparent label
  • The highest amount of BCAAs per 25-gram protein serving

Let’s be honest. We all want cheap, high-quality protein. The truth is that cheap and high quality do not go hand in hand, especially with protein powders.

AGN Roots Grass Fed Whey is worth every penny.
