Over the last couple of years, I’ve noticed a trend with the protein supplement industry. Supplement companies want to reinvent the wheel with “new” products and “new” research. Helping you reach your health and fitness goals. The reality? These “new products” are not new. These companies are spinning the words of scientific research to get your hard-earned money.
Enter clear whey isolate.
Clear whey is NOT a BCAA supplement. It’s a protein supplement. As stated in the article, “The Trend is Clear: Formulating with Clear Whey.” The article states, “Clear proteins are achieved through the acidification and purification of whey protein at a pH of less than 3.2. Clear protein allows a high concentration of protein in a beverage while keeping viscosity low. These ingredients provide a clean and slightly acidic flavor profile that creates a unique opportunity to utilize fresh and fun flavors.”
If you want to read more about clear whey, you can read more here.
This brings us to the clear whey review. Which one? Clear whey protein by Whey Goods.
Finding information on this clear whey isolate was a bit tedious. Here’s the reason, Whey Goods is underneath the umbrella brand of Plant Goods. Plant Goods are in the market of selling green drinks and plant based proteins. Whey Goods is selling (at this time) just a clear whey protein isolate.
With that said, let’s get into the review!
Value
I purchased a tub of the watermelon coconut flavor through Amazon. Visiting the website, all purchases are directed to their Amazon website. You can buy three different flavors, each flavor has 15 servings.
- Ice Tea Lemonade
- Lemon Lime Açaí
- Watermelon Coconut
The Plant Goods website, suggests that each tub has a MSRP of $30. When visiting their Amazon page, it’s actually cheaper.
- Standard price, $24, 15-servings per container, $1.60 per serving
- Subscribe and save, $21.60, $1.44 per serving
There are no bigger containers to get a better value.
Money-Back Guarantee
Plant Goods does offer a 30-Day Money-Back Guarantee. Yet, if you are not happy with their product, you do have to cover the S&H on your end to get your money back.
Value: 6. 15-servings for $24 is pretty steep. Especially, if you’re someone like me who is trying to get at least 40g of protein per meal. If there was a choice for a bigger container, it would be an easy sale. The ability to give consumers choice will go a long way. On the flip side, $24 for protein isolate. You can’t go wrong.
Protein Spiking
Reading the ingredient list, there are no “recovery blends” or added BCAAs. The amino acid profile is listed on the tub. The best way to check to see if a protein powder is spiked, take the protein per serving. Multiply that number by either .1 or .11. The resulting number to the Leucine amount listed on the amino acid profile.
Clear whey protein has 25g of protein per serving.
- 25 * .1 = 2.5g of Leucine
- 25 * .11 = 2.75g of Leucine
The average amount of Leucine in Clear Whey Protein is 2.61g. The math we did above suggests that the estimated amount of Leucine should be between 2.5g to 2.75g.
What happens if the estimated amount of Leucine is less than the amount listed in the amino acid profile? It could mean that the diet of the cow wasn’t as nutritious as it could be.
What happens if the estimated amount of Leucine is higher than the listed amount? The protein is spiked.
Protein Spiking: 10 (it’s not spiked).
Mixability
I’m dating myself when I say this… Does anyone remember Orange Julius?
This clear whey mixes like a champ. You can shake this for 5 to 8 times and all the powder will be gone. However, it comes out SUPER frothy, like a drink from Orange Julius.
If you read the ingredient list, an anti-foaming agent is listed (silicone).
Mixability: 9.5. FROTHY! No problems dissolving every single protein powder. However, just a simple shake ends up making this protein powder foaming. Honestly, it’s kind of annoying and I took half-point off.
Ingredient Profile
Eight. Eight total ingredients.
I usually hate when protein companies use Stevia in their products because it usually RUINS the taste of the protein. Here, because of how tart this protein tastes, you wouldn’t even know there is Stevia.
Ingredient Profile: 9. No protein blends. No artificial sweeteners. I would have never known that Stevia was in this protein. You couldn’t taste it.
Macro Composition
15 servings per container
Serving size is 1 scoop (about 31g)
- Calories 110
- Total Fat 0g
- Total Carbohydrate 1g
- Protein 25g
- Sodium 15 mg
Protein per serving; 25g/31g = 81% protein per serving.
Bloating
I did not experience any GI distress with this product. If I did, it was minimal to nonexistent.
Protein Scoop
What does 31g of this powder look like? One full scoop nets you about 32g.
Macro Composition: 8.5. Protein per serving is 81%. This protein gets an eight. In all honesty, it’s nice seeing a protein powder have less than 100 mg of sodium per serving. This is the lowest sodium content I’ve seen.
Flavor
You eat a War Head or a Sour Patch Kid?
The first time I drank this protein, I thought I was going to hate it. Like those sour or tart candies, give it a chance. Clear Whey Protein isn’t on the same level of tartness, but it’s tart!
Give this clear whey a chance. The flavor profile will grow on you and the fun flavors.
Flavor: 8.5. It’s foamy, frothy, and it’s tart. If you’re expecting a typical shake flavor, you’ll be in for a surprise. If you’re someone who isn’t a fan of tart flavors like cherry, you may not like it. If you have an open mind, you will be surprised. Clear Whey Protein isolate is a nice change of pace if you’re tired of the standard “milk protein flavors.” Sidenote, I’ve already discussed this. You will be surprised by the amount of foam. Let it set before drinking.
Final Thoughts
This is the first time I’ve ever drank a clear whey isolate. To be clear…. This is a true protein powder, it’s not a BCAA. The amino acid profile and ingredient list is on the container.
My only MAJOR gripe 😠… ONE size with only 15-servings. Give consumers a choice between a small container vs a big container. I’ll always buy the value size. Everyone likes choices!
My next minor gripes…😒
This thing is frothy! Like, I got done ordering a drink at Orange Julius frothy. When you shake this thing up, let it set for a moment so it can settle. When you take your first sip of Clear Whey Protein, it’s tart. If you’re not used to or not a fan of tart flavors, you may not like the flavor profile. But, have an open mind. It’s a great change of pace instead of the typical “milk protein” flavors.
So many positives to talk about this protein.
😊 25g per serving
😊 Less than 10 ingredients on the ingredient list
😊 Total carbs, 1g
😊 Minimal to no GI distress
😊 Fun flavors
As I shared before, Clear Whey Protein is a great product and I have no problems recommending. If you’re bored with the standard protein flavors and want something tart that feels like summer. This is a great product that will always leave you satisfied…
That’s what she said.
