Pure Choice Farms Casein Protein Review

📖 Pure Choice Farms Casein Protein Review Details

Back when I was in college… I’m really sharing with you how old I am… BACK WHEN I WAS IN COLLEGE, I was always in the pursuit of getting and keeping my gains. During my quest of gains knowledge, I read that taking a casein protein before bed would help stimulate muscle protein synthesis (MPS).

The reason being is that casein protein is a slower digesting protein. Taking a casein protein before bed would help prevent your body from “starving” while you slept. Obviously, you don’t starve while asleep. Supplement companies know how to market and tug on the emotions of young lifters.

Nonetheless, the ritual of taking a casein before bed was the norm for the next 30-days. With most casein powders, you are buying a problem

  • Mixes like concrete
  • Unexpected powder spots
  • Horrible protein farts

The issues that I experienced with various casein were not worth the price of admission. However, if you’re

someone who doesn’t want to spend the money on casein and would want similar benefits. Drink lactose free whole milk with a scoop of your favorite protein powder. Just be sure to get to 30g of protein.

Maybe you still want the benefits of casein, but don’t want to take the above route. Continue with this review.

In 2021, I did a review on Pure Choice Whey Protein. If you want the Spark Notes version, it’s an industry leader. The owner of Pure Choice contacted me after sharing my initial review. He asked me what were my thoughts on casein protein. I said, if you can make it a lactic free casein protein, I’d buy it!

For your information, cottage cheese is loaded with lactose. Get the lactose free cottage cheese. If you’re wondering, “when’s the best time to take a casein powder?” It’s before you go to bed.

Well, guess what we are reviewing? Pure Choice Farms Simple Blend Casein Protein.

💰 Pure Choice Farms Casein Protein Review – Price

I purchased one 2-pound bag of Pure Choice Farms casein protein, unflavored.

  • $44, 27 servings, $1.63 per serving.

Virgin here. So, this is my first ever casein review.

So let’s do a quick compare and contrast. Comparing the top-3 best casein powders only (no blended or mixed proteins) brands that Google spits out. The only stipulation is the container size for the 3 brands will be the same size, about 2-pounds.

Google search

The top-3 search results have their pros

  • Multiple reviews
  • Multiple flavors
  • Multiple serving size containers
  • Nationally recognized brands

Pure Choice casein also has its fair share of pros

  • Virtually lactose free
  • Simple ingredient list (one ingredient)
  • Money-back guarantee
  • Supporting a small (local to me) business

Money-back Guarantee

It’s nice to see a brand offer money-back guarantees. That means they really stand by their product and want consumers to buy.

I did not use Pure Choice Farms money-back guarantee because I LOVE this casein. In fact, I used all of it.

If you’re someone who is not a fan of their product, you can contact Pure Choice via email and get instructions on how to get more information. However, I don’t think it’ll be necessary.

Value: 7.5. The price per serving is above average. Yet, your mileage is obviously going to vary. Yes, Pure Choice casein only has one size and flavor. However, that one size, has only one ingredient and you’re getting a 115% money-back guarantee.

🤯 Pure Choice Farms Casein Protein Review – Amino Spiking

The amino acid profile is printed on the back of the bag.

Pure Choice Farms nutrition and AA facts.

Reading the AA profile, you’ll notice that there is an abnormally large amount of Glutamic Acid. This is normal and is naturally occurring in calcium caseinate proteins.

Protein Spiking: 10 (it’s not spiked).

🤝 Pure Choice Farms Casein Protein Review – Protein Shake Mix

This is a problem for all casein shakes. Not here, as long as you follow the directions.

  • 1-2 servings in shaker
  • 6-12 oz of milk, juice, or water in bottle
  • Mix for 20-30 seconds

I highly suggest shaking it like a Polaroid picture for the full 30 seconds. I had no problems shaking with 12 oz of juice or water. With 6 fl oz of fluid, it still mixes great.

Don’t use milk. The casein turns into a shake. It still mixes, but it’s the point of a milk shake. The only thing I didn’t try mixing a 2-scooper. I couldn’t see why it wouldn’t work.

Mixability: 9. If you’re using a shaker, it’s going to take 30 seconds. Most of the time, I didn’t have any problems clumping if you drink the shake ASAP. If you let the shake settle over a period of time, clumping will happen. Follow the directions.

🧪 Pure Choice Farms Casein Protein Review – Protein Ingredients

The only ingredient n Pure Choice casein is instant calcium caseinate protein. With trace of soy lecithin (an emulsifier).

When doing a quick Google search on different casein brands. Each of the brands above and different casein types. Those casein types were calcium caseinate, sodium caseinate, and micellar casein.

This begs the question. What’s the difference between calcium caseinate, sodium caseinate, micellar casein? Does it make a difference for you and your gains?

Micellar Casein

The least processed casein (compared to the other two below). Micellar protein is a complete protein. Micellar casein is a by-product of cheese production. Is micellar casein the gold standard for casein? Yea. And, calcium and sodium caseinates are lower quality (and cheaper) for the manufacture? Yea. It’s a fair assessment.

Calcium Caseinate

Created from the milk of a cow by changing the pH to either neutral or acidic. Used as an enricher to improve the long term stability of various food products sold in grocery stores. It’s a slow digesting (complete) protein, aides people to stay full for a longer period of time. This type of caseinate has a higher amount of naturally occurring glutamine.

Sodium Caseinate

Formed when separating casein from skim milk. Found in various dairy, meat, bakery goods and supplements. Sodium caseinate is recognized as a complete protein (just like calcium caseinate and micellar casein). As with the previous two casein proteins, sodium caseinate is a slow digesting protein.

If you want a deep analysis of the three commonly found casein proteins, check out this article by Transparent Labs.

Ingredient Profile: 9.5. One major ingredient, calcium caseinate with trace amounts of soy lecithin (emulsifier). Why only a 9.5? Calcium caseinate is not the highest quality casein compared to micellar casein. Regardless of which casein is used, they all digest slowly. All are great choices before bed.

🍨 Is Pure Choice Farms Casein Protein Lactose Free?

Pure Choice advertises that their casein has “virtually zero lactose.” I did feel full. I didn’t experience any major GI distress. The worst offender was mild bloating. Or is that the feeling of being full of casein?

My understanding that in order for a company to have the label “lactose free,” the protein grade needs to be above 95%.

One scoop is one serving.

⚖️ Powder Scoop Size

When filling up the scoop, I grab and go. Whatever is in the scoop, it’s what I put in. Majority of the average protein supplement user will do the same thing. The scoop is going to be full, but not packed. Well, does one scoop actually equal 33 grams?

Yup!

Macro Composition: 10. Each serving you get is 93% protein. Another plus is that this casein protein shake is low in sodium. No problems with bloating. No problems with the scoop.

😋 Pure Choice Farms Casein Protein Review – Does it Taste Good?

We all know what milk tastes like. Imagine a world, when you drink milk, but it doesn’t taste like anything. Yet, it still has that same milk consistency and feel.

Yet, this casein flavor mixes well with anything you desire. The powder will inherit the flavor of whatever liquid you pick. Water, juice, milk, it’ll taste like whatever you pick. But, adding calorie liquids to the power will change the macro profile.

You are your own cook in this instance. If adding 120 calories of juice isn’t a problem, you win. If you’re looking to trim down for a show, you’re not going to add more calories to the shake.

Flavor: 5. At first, drinking an unflavored protein is weird. But, you won’t gag. Pure Choice protein does deliver on what the casein should taste like, unflavored. Whatever liquid you pick, Pure Choice unflavored casein will inherit that flavor. When compared to other brands, you kind of want more flavor variety. On the flip side, you are getting a casein that doesn’t cause bloating, with a great macro profile.

🎬 Pure Choice Farms Casein Protein Review – Final Thoughts

I’ve tried many casein proteins. The majority provided some level of GI distress. My time with Pure Choice Farms casein protein, I was extremely happy and surprised.

Here is what made Pure Choice casein great

🥛 Simple ingredient list
🥛 High Protein
🥛 Easy to blend casein
🥛 Virtually lactose free (experienced mild bloating)
🥛 Money-back guarantee

My only gripe about this protein is that it only comes in one flavor, unflavored. But, whatever liquid you decide to mix with, pairs well. If you want to blend the casein with water, the flavor profile is as advertised, unflavored.

I experienced no GI distress with this casein. If you’re someone looking for a fantastic casein. And you’re willing to overlook an unflavored protein, buy this protein.
