Genuine Muscle Milk Protein Powder Review
Muscle Milk Whey Protein always seems to be staring back at you. The label of Muscle Milk isn’t much to talk about.
White container with essentially 4 different colors. I mean, if it wasn’t for the nice font, you could mistake it for a dollar store protein!
Essentially, Muscle Milk has two different protein supplement lines: RTD (Ready to Drink) and their powders. Within those two product lines, Genuine and Pro Series. What the difference between the two lines? Genuine has a base amount of protein and the Pro Series offers more. Simple as that.
Cytosport supplements have much to offer: casein, unflavored, probiotic line, weight gainer, coffee protein, and bars. If you want to see their entire product line, check it out
With that out of the way, let’s review Muscle Milk Whey Protein!
Best Place to Buy Muscle Milk Protein Powder
One container of chocolate Muscle Milk is priced at $17.96. I purchased this container straight from the “W.”
- $17.96 per container, about 12 servings per container (2 scoops), $1.50 per serving.
That’s a hit in the wallet. Considering that this is a concentrate/isolate blend.
If you go to the Muscle Milk website, the company will actually list retailers in your area where you can actually purchase their product. It will list the prices and different flavors as well! Which brings me to my next point.
Prices and servings will vary depending on the flavor you purchase. Is there any value going with a 5-pound container of Chocolate?
- Amazon priced at $45.87, 32 servings, $1.43 per serving.
Value: 7. This might be the most expensive budget priced protein on the market.
Is Muscle Milk Amino Spiked?
The container I have does not list an amino profile. An amino acid profile can be found online. If you purchase a 5lb container, a profile will be printed.
Examining the ingredient list, there is nothing suggesting that the protein amount per serving is inflated. Examining the amino table suggests that the amount of protein listed on the container is what you are ingesting.
If you’re an athlete and worried about any banned substances, there is a NSF Certified Sport label to confirm that Muscle Milk is tested for any illegal substances.
Protein Spiking: 10 (Not spiked).
How Does Muscle Milk Shake
“Mix 2 scoops of Muscle Milk Genuine Protein Powder into 8 fluid ounces of water…”
Cytosport’s Muscle Milk mixes alright. Just follow the directions. Yes, the protein powder is dense and it may not seem like it will blend. Mix with 8 fl oz of water.
Does it mix with whole milk and 8 fl oz? Yes.
Don’t get creative by mixing with less water. You might have to give it a good extended shake (or even throw it in a blender).
Mixability: 8.5. This protein mixes well if you follow the direction. If you use whole milk, it will clump here and there.
Muscle Milk Genuine Protein Powder Ingredients
With a lot of protein powders that are found on the shelf in brick and mortar stores, this is going to be about average, to a certain extent.
The protein components of Muscle Milk protein blend: Whey protein concentrate and milk protein isolate. The first ingredient in protein powders is ALWAYS protein. You’re probably asking yourself this question…
“Does Muscle Milk have whey protein isolate?”
No. Whey protein isolate is a fast digesting protein that is quickly absorbed. Milk protein isolate is a highly filtered casein used for slow absorption. You guessed it. Milk protein isolate is a milk derivative.
Cytosport states that Genuine Muscle Milk will
- Help Satisfy Hunger
- Help Build Muscle
The ingredient list helps this product accomplish what Muscle Milk is offering for their consumers.
Are there other proteins on the markets with fewer ingredients? Yea. I can assure you that their powder is not going to be enough to stimulate muscle growth or help satisfy hunger.
Muscle milk contains ingredients usually found in budget priced protein powders: artificial sweeteners, maltodextrin, acesulfame potassium, sodium caseinate, medium chain triglycerides (MCT), triglyceride, sucralose, canola oil, sunflower oil, lactoferrin, fructose, calcium sodium caseinate, calcium caseinate, mono- and diglycerides, tocopherol, magnesium oxide, phosphate, potassium chloride
Is Muscle Milk Lactose Free
The grade of protein used in Muscle Milk whey protein is awesome! For me, blended protein powders usually cause GI distress. Muscle Milk is not listed as lactose free. I did experience minimal to no digestive issues. Muscle Milk does contain dairy and does NOT have digestive enzymes nor lactase to aid in digestion. If you have a super sensitive stomach, here’s your warning.
Ingredient Profile: 8.5. The ingredient list found in Muscle Milk is extensive. Muscle Milk helps satisfy hunger. Reason being, milk protein isolate. Whey protein concentrate for the fast digesting. It’s a great meal replacement shake.
Muscle Milk Nutrition Facts
Serving size is 2 scoops (70g)
Calories 280
- 9 grams of fat
- 20 grams of carbohydrates
- 2g of fiber
- 3g of sugar
- 32 grams of protein per serving (16 grams of protein per scoop)
A pictograph can be found on Muscle Milk. 32 grams of protein in Muscle Milk is similar to 2 chicken breasts. 4 glasses of milk. You get the idea. Muscle Milk is a high protein shake that can help you reach your protein intake goals. It’s a good choice to help you recover from a workout.
Losing weight is a different story. Muscle Milk is not low fat. It has lots of carbs.
What is Muscle Milk Whey Protein Powder Good For?
Here is what I would classify Muscle Milk. Weight gain shake or MRE. Muscle Milk will make you gain weight. There are better protein powders with fewer calories per serving. 32 grams of protein is great. At 280 calories. You can do better. If you’re going to consume Muscle Milk post workout, shoot for 40 grams of protein. Those calories are going to pile on fast…
Macro Composition: 9. With “milk” in the name. Muscle Milk is calorie dense. It doesn’t state on the label it will help you lose weight. Hands down, this is a great meal replacement shake. It’s not heavy either for a post-workout shake.
How Does Muscle Milk Chocolate Taste?
If you use water, as stated in the directions, it has the consistency of skim milk. If you decide to use whole milk (or reduced fat milk) it’ll taste like malted milk.
Muscle Milk Best Flavor
These are the flavors offered by Muscle Milk.
Banana Crème | Chocolate |
Cookies N’ Crème | Strawberries N’ Crème |
Vanilla Crème |
Looking over the positive flavor reviews. Buyers were wowed by: Vanilla, Chocolate, and Strawberries N’ Crème. Purchase through my affiliate link. The only con flavor is Cookies N’ Crème.
I’ve personally tried all the flavors. I’d agree with the majority of buyers. My personal favorite is Banana Crème and Strawberries N’ Crème. Cytosport didn’t screw up the basics. Avoid Cookie’s N’ Crème…
Flavor: 8.5. It’s a solid taste of chocolate. Is it the best tasting protein on the market? No. As a budget priced protein, Muscle Milk is the best tasting.
Is Muscle Milk Protein Powder Good?
If you’re in a bind and need to pick up more protein powder, you can’t go wrong with Muscle Milk.
What’s nice about this product (and marketing) is that it doesn’t state it will help you lose weight. What can Muscle Milk do for you?
- Recover from workouts
- Pack on lean muscle
- Push off hunger
Yea, the price can be a shocker after reading how many servings you are getting in a 2-pound container.
Muscle Milk really knocks it out of the park.
