Unbiased Rule 1 Source 7 Protein Review
Read my unbiased Rule 1 Source 7 Protein review. Is it worth your money? I’ve tried Source7, and I’m here to say, don’t use it as a post-workout protein shake. If you want to lose weight, Source7 protein is a superior meal replacement shake to a post-workout shake.
💬 Real Talk: Rule 1 Source7 Protein Review
Dig into Rule 1 Source7 Protein and you’ll find a product that’s good for keeping you full as a meal replacement but falls short in other areas.
While it promises a robust blend of seven protein sources, the actual efficacy for muscle growth is questionable with only 22 grams per scoop—insufficient for optimal muscle protein synthesis. 🏋️♂️
The bigger concern? A glaring lack of transparency about the amino acid profile and ingredients makes it hard to trust what’s truly inside. And let’s not overlook the overpowering artificial taste with 3 of the offered flavors!
- Filling meal replacement
- Underdosed and too varied for muscle-building
- No fiber, limited long-term satiety
- Artificial flavor prominence in some flavors
- Transparency concerns about ingredient quality

📖 Rule 1 Source 7 Protein Review Details
R1 Source7 Protein is advertised as the following
- Multi-source protein blend
- Made from a combined seven protein sources that offer 22 grams of protein
- Informed Choice Tested, free of any illegal or performance substances
Continue reading to understand what kind of protein Source7 is, when you should take Source7, the best time to drink Source7, and how many scoops of Source7 protein to stimulate muscle protein synthesis.
What Kind of Protein is Rule 1 Source7 Protein Powder❓
The label states that Source7 can be used “before or after workouts, or as an anytime snack.” Technically, that’s supplement boilerplate talk. All protein powder companies encourage using protein powder multiple times a day.
Using Source7 in this review and my background as a nutritionist and sports supplementation specialist, I believe that Source7 is best utilized as a meal replacement or before-bed shake.
Source7 is a highly thick shake to drink before working out. It also makes your stomach distended and complete, which is not ideal before hitting a heavy set of squats or bench presses.
Examining the ingredient list for Source7 doesn’t make it a great post-workout shake. Although there are seven different protein sources, the majority are slow-digesting proteins. The threshold for muscle protein synthesis for slow-digesting proteins is 30 grams.
⚖️ Is Rule 1 Source 7 Protein Good for Weight Loss?
Rule 1 Source 7 Protein powder may help if you want to lose weight. Here’s why.
As a whole, and when compared to other meal replacement shakes, Source 7 protein offers a low-calorie option and mostly slow-digesting proteins, slow-digesting proteins will give you the feeling of a full stomach, which may last until your next meal.
However, the nutrition facts for Source 7 show no fiber, so that feeling of fullness may only last a couple of hours.
Finally, if you can not drink lactose or have casein protein before bed, you will experience moderate GI issues.
The symptoms that I experienced while drinking Source 7 protein are bloating, mild abdominal cramping, and gas.
🕥 When Should I take Rule 1 Source7 Protein?
Know what we know about Rule 1 Source7 protein
- The majority of the protein blend is considered slow-digesting
- Not ideal for pre-, post-workout
- Experience a level of stomach fullness
Based on our information, Rule 1 Source7 protein is best utilized before bed or as a meal replacement. As a nutritionist, I emphasize whole foods first. Even though you may feel satiated drinking Source7 protein, protein shakes offer too little satiety.
If your goal is to feel full while dieting, but you’re having difficulty finding foods that offer a high level of fullness. Read my article, “The Best Way to Use Protein Powder to Lose Weight.” The link will direct you to a ranking of high-satiety whole foods you can implement to lose weight.
🪓 How Many Scoops of Rule 1 Source 7 Protein?
If your goal is to build muscle, research suggests consuming at least 25 grams of protein with a minimum of 3 grams of leucine. Here’s the problem with Source7 protein.
In total, you should aim for between 1.25 and 1.5 scoops of Source7 protein if your goal is to build and maintain muscle.
Using what we know, the natural occurrence of leucine is 10% to 11% per 1 gram of protein. Source7 offers 22 grams of protein. Leucine should be 2.2g to 2.42 grams. One serving is 39 grams.
We can not verify the amount of leucine; here’s why: Rule 1 does not want to share a legitimate amino acid profile. Without an official amino acid profile that lists the amount of naturally occurring BCAAs, we don’t know the quality of the protein or the amount of leucine in one serving of Source7.
🛒 Where Can You Buy Rule 1 Source7 Protein Powder?
You can only purchase Source7 protein powder directly from Rule 1. There are two size options and six different flavor options. I ended up scoring a holiday flavor, Pumpkin Spice.
- 2-pounds, $39.99, 23 servings, $1.74 per serving
- 5-pounds, $84.99, 56 servings on average, $1.52 per serving.
The best part about buying directly from Rule 1 is the sales. There is a 25% off sitewide sale at the time of this writing. If your purchase order exceeds $100, you get free S&H. Base shipping is $9.99.
If you enjoy Rule 1 proteins and products, you can sign up for R1 Rewards. You are rewarded points that are dependent upon the amount you spin. Use those points on discounted future purchases. $1 spent is 10 points.
💸 Does Rule 1 Offer a Money-Back Guarantee
Rul1 does offer a return policy. Rule 1 Return Policy is as stated:
- The product was delivered within the last 15 days.
- The product is unopened, the seal is intact, and in its original packaging.
- You have the packing slip, order confirmation, or proof of purchase from ruleoneproteins.com.
Value: 1 out of 10. Regardless of how much you are paying per serving at Rule 1. Once again, their protein powders need more transparency. The questionable decision to use seven different proteins is unnecessary.
⚛️What is the Amino Profile for Rule 1 Source7 Protein Powder?
I’ve done protein reviews on Rule 1 Whey Blend and Rule 1 R1 Protein. Once I post my Source7 protein review, I will review Rule 1’s discounted multi-blend protein, PRO6 Protein.
All 4 Rule 1 proteins offer the same “amino acid profile.” What is shared on all of Rule 1 protein powders are not amino acid profiles. Do you want to know why?
A table that shares percentage amounts of essential amino acids, conditionally essential amino acids, and non-essential amino acids is not a profile. It’s a table with percentages.
The table would be more useful if each amino acid had a specific value, weight, and amino acid profile tied together. I did what anyone would do: I contacted Rule 1 Customer Service.
An amino acid profile was not shared. I’ll share the email interaction that I had with Rule 1.
🧪 Is Rule 1 Amino Spiking?
You want an amino acid profile with specific weights and values. The amount of BCAAs in the protein powder can indicate protein quality.
Rule 1 makes a statement about Source7 protein: 5g BCAAs*. “*Per serving. Values are naturally occurring & approximated.”
Generally, an amino acid profile can provide context to the protein quality you may be purchasing. Furthermore, that amino acid profile provides proof that there are the suggested amounts of BCAAs per serving. After contacting Rule 1 for an amino acid profile, all protein powders offered by Rule 1 use low-quality amino spiked proteins.
You need to see an amino acid profile to determine whether that statement is correct. Without such a profile, an informed buyer wonders, “Am I getting a high-quality protein?”
📜 Is Rule 1 Source7 Protein Powder 3rd Party Tested?
All Rule 1 protein powders are third-party tested by informed choice. That means they do not contain any performance-enhancing drugs or substances.
Amino Spiking: 5 out of 10. What is offered as an amino acid profile by Rule 1 is not a profile. A table with listed amino acids with a total percentage for each group falls woefully short. I contacted Rule 1 for a profile. They double-downed on their “amino acid profile.” Buyer beware.
🥤 What’s The Best Way To Mix Source7 Protein Powder?
I recommend using water as your liquid of choice. Once you shake Source7 protein, this diet shake will go down thick.
I did not use any other liquid, but you are brave if you use milk or nut milk. So, what are the mixing directions?
- One scoop of Source7 Protein
- 6-8 oz. of water, milk, or your favorite beverage in a blender (or glass with a spoon)
- Shake or stir
Using a shaker bottle, I had tiny dry specs lined up along the shaker bottle walls and under the pour spout. I did not have any dry spots drinking the protein powder.
⚖️ Is One Scoop of Source7 Protein Powder a Serving Scoop Size?
Shakability Test: 8 out of 10. Compared to other protein powders marketed as meal replacement shakes, Source7 mixes above average for seven different proteins. When compared to BSN Syntha-6, it’s not even a comparison. I still had noticeable specs and small bumps on the shaker walls.
📋 Rule 1 Source7 Protein Ingredients
Rule1 Source7 Protein incorporates a comprehensive blend of proteins and other ingredients. Optimizing muscle is not the goal, but keeping you complete of your weight loss goals. Here’s a brief description of why each component is included in the protein powder:
- Protein Blend: Combines various forms of whey protein (concentrate, isolate, hydrolysate, and native whey) and other proteins like micellar casein, milk protein isolate, and pea protein to provide a full spectrum of slow-digesting proteins.
- Creamer (Sunflower Oil, Maltodextrin, Sodium Caseinate, Silicon Dioxide, Monoglycerides, Mixed Tocopherols): Enhances texture and solubility and preserves long-term shelf life.
- Natural and Artificial Flavors: These are added to improve the taste, making the protein shake enjoyable and palatable.
- Xanthan Gum and Cellulose Gum: These are thickening agents that are too thick.
- Soy and/or Sunflower Lecithin: Acts as an emulsifier, aiding in the even dispersion of the protein powder in liquids.
- Salt: Flavor enhancer.
- Sucralose and Acesulfame Potassium: Artificial sweeteners that add sweetness without calories.
Where to start with this ingredient profile? Let’s start with the easy win. Soy and tocopherols.
Soy Lecithin in Protein Powders 🌱
In an article, I compared isolate vs. concentrate whey protein. The two brands that I was comparing were Optimum Nutrition and Pure Choice Farms.
Optimum Nutrition’s 100% Gold Standard Whey uses soy lecithin as an emulsifier. Soy lecithin is a cheap emulsifier. Rule 1’s Source7 protein also uses soy lecithin.
Research shares that soy lecithin is “handy for mixability, sure, but not so great if your tummy throws a tantrum with soy around. Nausea, rashes, the works.”
If you are lactose intolerant, you may experience another level of digestive discomfort by drinking Source7.
What about the preservatives found in Source7 protein powder?
What Are Tocopherols? 🐕
Using science names is excellent. Nobody in the public would know that it’s a preservative.
Research indicates that tocopherols are safe for human consumption and are used as a dog food preservative. When used in protein powders, tocopherols are low-quality preservatives.
Do other protein powders have tocopherols? Check out my Old School Labs, Vintage Brawn Protein review, and Machine Whey Protein review.
Ironically, I classified those two protein powders as diet shakes. MTS Machine Whey even suggests and is labeled as a meal replacement shake.
Are tocopherols only used in meal replacement powders in the supplement industry? What do you think?

Why Does Source7 Have So Many Protein Sources? 🤔
When a potential buyer of protein powder sees so many protein sources, they may view it as a “does it all protein shake.” What does that mean?
Source7 is a multisource protein. Rule 1 offers a protein powder that does it all—meal replacement, nighttime, pre- and post-workout shakes—which will solve a significant problem for gym-goers—one protein for all their needs.
Thankfully, I’ve covered most of these protein powders in different articles. Let’s examine the three major categories found in Source7 protein powder.
Fast Digesting Protein Sources ⚡
Source7 protein powder contains fast-digesting sources such as whey protein concentrate, whey protein isolate, native whey protein isolate, and whey protein hydroslate.
I examined the muscle-building protein powders and ranked their effectiveness in building muscle. For the full details, visit my Ascent Protein Powder review.
Taking an excerpt from my review, “Ranking Protein Powders: Where Does Native Whey Stand?”
The rankings for best muscle-building protein powders will be ranked first to last.
- Whey Protein Isolate: The front-runner for muscle building, thanks to its high protein concentration and rapid absorption.
- Whey Protein Concentrate: A close second, rich in leucine and essential amino acids.
- Casein: The slow-digesting dark horse, ideal for prolonged muscle recovery and anti-catabolism.
- Native Whey: Although high in quality, its muscle-building benefits are on par with standard whey protein.
- Milk: A natural blend of whey and casein, offering a balanced protein source but less concentrated than isolated forms.
As shared at the beginning of this review, if your goal is to build muscle, you need 25 grams of protein with 3 grams of leucine. Source7 protein doesn’t hit the threshold for 25 grams. Rule 1 doesn’t want to provide a formal amino acid profile.
What about whey protein hydrolysate?
Basic Whey Protein 🥛
I have two other sources for your fancy.
Optimum Nutrition is a leading protein powder manufacturer. 100% Gold Standard Whey uses hydrolyzed whey protein. In my article Nutricost vs. Optimum Nutrition, I explained why Optimum Nutrition uses hydrolyzed whey protein (protein hydrolysate).
I wrote an article examining lactose in whey protein isolate. In that article, I examined the hydrolyzed protein process. The process further filters carbohydrates (lactose) and fat, making hydrolyzed protein the most expensive and at the same time almost lactose-free… [hydrolyzed whey is] primarily utilized in food production as a preservative… [H]ydrolyzed whey protein is near the bottom.
Let’s examine the slow-digesting protein powders found in Source7.
Slow Digesting Protein Sources 🕒
Why are there slow-digesting protein sources in Source7? As a meal replacement shake, the goal is to make you complete while the protein powder slowly digests throughout the day.
The two slow-digesting protein powders are micellar casein and milk protein isolate.
I examined the muscle-building capabilities of slow-digesting protein powder. I’m going to reference my PR Breaker HitPoint Ultra Protein review. HitPoint Ultra uses milk protein isolate as its primary protein source.
In PR Breaker HitPoint Ultra, milk protein isolate is used because it causes less bloating than micellar casein. Unfortunately, micellar casein is one of the seven protein sources in Source7; hello, bloating.
If you want to build muscle with casein protein (or milk protein isolate), you should aim for 30 to 40g of casein protein post-workout. Source7 will not build your muscle with one scoop; it is strictly a varied protein, meal replacement shake.
Finally, look at the last protein source: pea protein, which is the least likely to build muscle.
Plant-Based Protein Source 🌿
To date, I’ve only reviewed one non-dairy, plant-based protein powder. That protein powder is Orgain. If you’re interested in how many early reviews went and how far they have come, check out my Orgain Sport Protein review. It’s a train wreck.
I plan on writing about a handful of plant-based protein powders and how much plant-based protein is necessary to build muscle. Of course, these future plant-based protein powders will be based on science, not PEDs.
Let’s talk pea protein.
How Much Pea Protein is Needed for Muscle Growth? 🟢
Source7 protein powder offers pea protein as the final source of protein. How much pea protein is necessary to build muscle?
Research indicates that an individual needs to consume between 25 and 38 grams of pea protein to stimulate muscle growth. However, when compared to whey protein, whey is superior due to its fast digestive properties.
If you’re interested in reading the academic study examining how much pea protein is needed to build muscle, check it out here.
🌍 Is Rule1 Source7 Made in the USA?
That recognizable American flag seal, “made in America with ingredients of international origin,” makes another appearance. What does that mean?
The protein powder is internationally sourced due to these statements
- Manufactured in a GMP-compliant facility
- 3rd-party tested
- American seal sharing is “made in America with ingredients of international origin.”
I emailed Rule 1 Customer Service asking for information about country of origin sourcing. No response is a response.
Ingredients List: 5 out of 10. The ingredient list score is low for the following reasons: it needs to have label transparency on the exact amount of the protein sources. Source7 feels like a cash-out for Rule 1. Rule 1 got a fantastic low-price offer from its whey protein supplier. The whey protein remnants are from different protein sources. Buy low-priced ingredients and offer the final product as a premium product.
🥗 Nutrition Facts for Rule 1 Source7 Powder
Here are the nutrition facts for Source7 protein powder, Vanilla.
Serving size 1 Scoop, 39g
Calories 160
- Total Fat 4.5g
- Sodium 210mg
- Total Carbohydrate 9g
- Dietary Fiber 0g
- Total Sugars 5g
- Protein 22 grams
Throughout this review, I’ve shared that Rule 1’s Source 7 protein is a meal replacement shake. A high amount of fat (4.5 grams is a high amount for a protein shake) will slow digestion.
Source7 protein powder has 0g of fiber. You will not feel full from the fiber. You will feel full from the slow-digesting proteins: Micellar casein, milk protein isolate, and pea protein. Not only that, but you will feel uncomfortably bloated.
🍗 What Percent of Protein Does Rule 1 Source7 Powder Have Per Serving?
Here are the flavors with the protein percent amounts.
Pistachio Gelato: 22g of protein / 39 gram serving size = 56% protein per serving
Chocolate Gelato: 22g of protein / 41 gram serving size = 54% protein per serving
Vanilla Gelato: 22g of protein / 39 gram serving size = 56% protein per serving
Salted Caramel Gelato: 22g of protein / 39 gram serving size = 56% protein per serving
Cookies and Creme Gelato: 22g of protein / 40 gram serving size = 55% protein per serving
Chocolate Peanut Butter Gelato: 22g of protein / 41.5 gram serving size = 53% protein per serving
Pumpkin Spice (Seasonal): 22g of protein / 39 gram serving size = 56% protein per serving
🍨 Is Rule 1 Source7 Protein Powder Lactose Free
Rule 1’s Source 7 protein is not lactose-free. That thick feeling after finishing a shake is by design. It’s supposed to make you feel full. At the same time, that could be either the soy used as an emulsifier or the pea protein.
Warn your roommates: Things may get stinky when you drink Source7 protein. Final warning: Do not double up the servings.
❌ Rule 1 Source7 Protein Powder Gluten-free?
Source7 has an official “gluten-free” tag. If you’re sensitive to gluten or have celiac disease, the gluten-free tag may be worth the price of admission for a meal replacement shake.
Nutrition Facts: 5.5 out of 10. Source7’s multi-source scheme needs to be more positive. If your goal is to build muscle, look elsewhere. Source7 is a serviceable meal replacement shake if you want to feel full until your next meal. However, the multi-protein sources do not do Source7 any good.
👌Does Rule 1 Source7 Protein Powder Taste Good?
When using the Source7 Gelato protein series, there are no advertised pictures of what you’ll be drinking. However, the color schemes of the potential flavor you’ll be consuming will be prominent.
The two protein Source 7 Proteins I’ll be taking on a test drive are vanilla and pumpkin spice.
Warning: Vanilla has a robust artificial wave of flavor. Once you get past that initial wave, the flavor starts coming through.
Finally, as I shared in the ‘Mixability’ section, Source 7 protein doesn’t look like a thick shake. But when you drink one, you will feel full.
Vanilla 🍦
At first, Vanilla is borderline neutral. However, small waves of vanilla stay well past the party is over. Those small flavor bursts build on the previous sip, and you start developing a long-term vanilla flavor. However, there are better attempts at vanilla. I was left wanting more. Score 6.5
Pumpkin Spice (Seasonal Flavor) 🎃
If you’re a fan of pumpkin pie, you’ll be in for a treat for Pumpkin Spice. Opening the protein container, you are automatically hit with the smell of pumpkin and cinnamon. Opening your shaker, you’ll have subtle notes of a fresh pumpkin pie. How does it taste?
No medicinal or strange aftertaste. Easily, Pumpspic is the superior of the two flavors I’ve drank. Score 9.0
🍨 What are the Flavors of Rule 1 Source7 Protein Powder?
Rule 1 Source7 Protein offers a diverse range of gelato-inspired flavors. Here is the list of flavors you can purchase.
- Pistachio Gelato: A rich and nutty pistachio flavor that brings creamy and thick gelato.
- Chocolate Gelato: Deep, smooth chocolate gelato flavor.
- Vanilla Gelato: Classic vanilla with a gelato take.
- Salted Caramel Gelato: Perfectly balanced decadent gelato take with the sweetness of caramel with a hint of salt.
- Cookies and Creme Gelato: A sweet treat-inspired take on chocolate cookies and creamy gelato.
- Chocolate Peanut Butter Gelato: A luxurious, decadent chocolate and smooth peanut butter blend.
- Pumpkin Spice (Seasonal): Embrace the season with this warmly spiced pumpkin flavor.
⭐️ Highest-Rated Rule 1 Source7 Protein Powder Flavors Based on Reviews
Amazon does not sell Rule 1 Source7 Protein powder. We are left scouring the small amount of negative reviews at ruleoneproteins.com.
All the negative reviews stem from when the product launched in October 2023. A total of 3 reviews are written. In a nutshell, this is a summary of all three of the 1-star reviews.
- The Pistachio flavor was different from what was advertised.
- Peanut Butter Chocolate wasn’t for me. The shake is extraordinarily thick and has an artificial flavor.
- Delivery of wrong product.
Two known flavors have an artificial flavor: Peanut Butter Chocolate and Vanilla. Pistachio has a questionable taste.
Flavor: 8 out of 10. Don’t believe the hype on the website. When Source 7 hits your lips, Vanilla has a strong medicinal taste. I questioned if I should finish Rule 1’s Vanilla flavor. I did; it was serviceable, but I would not repurchase it.
Pumpkin Spice had my taste buds screaming, “This pumpkin pie shake is amazing!” If fast food offered a pumpkin pie shake, this is it. You will most definitely taste the holiday flavors. I’d rebuy Pumpkin Spice.
🏁 Finishing the Rule 1 Source7 Protein Review
Rule 1 continually puts out protein products, based on my personal use and professional reviews, that are substandard.
Like so many other protein powders in the middle of the tier, they all do the same thing: mix well and taste solid. The issue is in the protein sources.
Is it essential to have seven different protein sources? Source7 offers a blend of both fast and slow-digesting proteins. Then, add a plant-based protein source. To me, this doesn’t make sense. The question is, “Why?”
Why are these protein sources underdosed? Source7 protein could be a better pre- or post-workout protein powder. If you are lactose intolerant, you will have a giant brick sitting in your stomach.
It’s great as a meal replacement shake. It’s relatively low in calories, most flavors taste good, and mixes well. To preserve all that muscle you’re working hard to keep, aim for 1.5 scoops per shake.
In reality, a 23-serving container is less than 12 shakes—not a great value. If you’re looking for alternatives to Source7, keep reading. I have you covered.
Source7 Protein Meal Replacement Alternatives 🔀
Panda Supps protein is cheaper, tastes better, and doesn’t sit like a brick in your stomach. However, that protein isn’t a meal replacement shake. If you’re interested in a “do it all” protein, check out my Panda Supps protein review.
MRE Lite may appear in your search. However, I do not recommend MRE Lite. Collagen (beef protein isolate) is the primary protein source. If you aim to diet down and preserve lean muscle, beef protein isolate is a lousy choice and ineffective. If you’re still interested, check out my MRE Lite protein review.
Are you looking for a genuinely bloat-free nutritional shake? BSN Syntha-6 is a solid choice. However, the need for an amino acid profile is concerning. If you’re willing to overlook that, you get a high-fiber meal replacement that mixes great, has the best-tasting protein, and offers excellent value. Check out my full, in-depth BSN Syntha-6 review.
Machine Whey is a great choice. However, using tocopherols, a dog food preservative, could be better. My only other knock on Machine Whey is that it, too, sets like a rock in your stomach. If you’re lactose intolerant, you’re going to have a gas explosion. Read my Machine Whey protein review if you want my highest-rated meal replacement shake.
Are you looking for an effective digestive enzyme that can combat lactose intolerance? Check out NatureBell. NatureBell enzyme has 1000 ALU of lactase. Furthermore, it contains enzymes that help with anti-gas and bloating.
I’ve been using NatureBell Digestive Enzymes with Prebiotics to say goodbye to being overly bloated and help with digestive issues with my protein powder. Use the Amazon Affiliate Link to purchase NatureBell Digestive Enzymes with Prebiotics.
Is Rule 1 A Good Protein Brand?✅
When you read reviews about Rule 1 protein, nothing but great things will appear. 3rd party tested, endorsed by a 4x Olympia Competitor, and of course R1 Quality.
“…we will never put a product on our site – or on a shelf – that we wouldn’t put in our own gym bag.”
Rule 1 Protein, ‘R1 Quality’
As a whole, Rule 1 protein is not good. Lacking any semblance of an amino acid profile with specific weights and measurements, as a buyer, you can’t verify the quality of the protein in any R1 protein product. After numerous requests for an amino acid profile, Rule 1 Protein wants to be a “proprietary protein” label.
I firmly believe that Rule 1 proteins are only a purchase at a steep discount. That was your warning.
I’ve reviewed all of Rule 1 protein powders. Rules 1’s best protein powder is PRO6 protein (discontinued) or R1 Whey Protein. After reviewing and using Source7 protein, avoid it at all costs.
Do you agree with my final review of Rule 1’s Source7 protein? Have you tried other Rule 1 protein powders? Comment below, let me know. I’m interested in your comments.
