Unbiased Legion Protein Review
In this Legion Protein review, I will explain why Legion Athletics Whey Protein is not the best certified grass-fed protein powder. I’ll even go as far as to say that Legion Whey+ Protein Powder is the 2nd best tasting flavor of grass-fed protein powder.
Legion Whey Isolate is a solid purchase. However, you may question your purchase when you compare the amino acid profile and leucine content to similar protein powders. The amino acid profile and leucine content are crucial factors in determining the quality and effectiveness of a protein powder. Let’s get into the details of this Legion Protein review.
Legion Protein Powder: Packed with Quality, but How Does It Stack Up?
Legion Whey Protein stands out for its grass-fed, non-GMO Irish whey, offering a wholesome option for fitness enthusiasts. It supports effective muscle recovery with 22 grams of protein and 2.6 grams of leucine per serving. However, compared to other grass-fed proteins, Legion might fall short in BCAA and leucine content, which are crucial for optimal performance gains.
- High-quality, grass-fed whey
- Wide range of flavors
- Free from artificial ingredients
- Lower leucine and total BCAA content compared to other top brands
- Higher cost per serving than some competitors

🏋️♂️ Is Legion Grass Fed Whey a Meal Replacement or Post Workout Shake?
Information about the appropriate time to use Legion Grass Fed Whey is kept private. However, there is an FAQ for Legion Athletics Whey+. The question is, “Does eating whey protein after a workout help you build muscle faster?”
The response is that “that eating whey protein after a workout can help you build muscle faster. It’s a good idea to eat 30-to-40 grams of protein within an hour or two of finishing a workout, and whey protein is a perfectly viable, convenient, and tasty option. Studies show that protein eaten after a workout causes more muscle protein synthesis than otherwise.”
Use Legion Grass Fed Whey post workout.
💪 How Much Legion Athletics Whey+ Should I Take After A Workout?
Research suggests that your post-workout protein shake should offer a minimum of 25 grams of protein and up to 3 grams of leucine. Legion Athletics Whey+ offers 22 grams of protein and an estimated 2.6 grams of leucine.
As a whole, aim for a minimum of 1.25 scoops of Legion Athletics Whey+ post-workout to stimulate muscle protein synthesis. If you’re looking to maximize the number of servings in your container of Legion Athletics Whey+, I recommend using high-protein skim milk as your liquid.
Mix one scoop of Legion Athletics Whey+ with one cup of high-protein skim milk. Leucine information shared by the USDA states that one cup of skim milk offers 8 grams of protein with .8 grams of leucine. Fairlife skim milk offers 13 grams of protein with 1.3 grams of leucine. You will surely exceed the 25 grams of protein with 3 grams of leucine.
🛒Where To Buy Legion Protein Powder

Value: 6 out of 10. There is a lot to like about Legion Protein Powder. However, when considering its price and its benefits, there may be better value for some. This begs the question, is it the best grass-fed Irish protein in the market? Keep reading to find out. Don’t want to go through the hassle? No, Legion Protein Powder is not the best.
⚛️ Is Legion Whey + Protein Amino Spiked
You will not find an amino acid profile in the Legion Whey + Protein bag or on the website. However, the website shows that each serving offers 22 grams of protein, including 5.6 grams of BCAAs.
Stay with me on this: 22 grams of protein, offering 5.6 grams of BCAAs.
The amount of BCAAs per serving should be advertised on the bag. I did the next sensible thing any honest reviewer should do: email Legion and request an amino acid profile. Legion was happy enough to provide an amino acid profile per 100 grams of powder.
That’s annoying. Just share based on one serving of Legion Whey + Protein. Why not provide an amino acid profile for a single serving? Here’s why Legion doesn’t provide for a single serving: Legion Whey + Protein does not have a high amino acid profile compared to its peers.
The estimated BCAAs per serving are based on the unflavored size of 26.4 grams. We are left speculating on the specific amount of BCAAs. Let’s use our best guess.
100g powder of Legion Whey + Protein | Estimated 26.4g serving size of Legion Whey + Protein | |
Leucine | 10.5 grams | 2.613 grams |
Isoleucine | 6.7 grams | 1.667grams |
Valine | 5.3 grams | 1.32 grams |
Total BCAAs | 22.5 grams | 5.6 grams |
🐄 Is Legion Protein Powder Clean?
Suppose you’re looking for a protein powder free of pesticides, hormones, artificial flavors and ingredients, and GMOs. Legion protein powder is clean. Labdoor did a thorough report examining heavy metals and mold. The report shows that Legion Protein Powder is certified clean.
🌱 Is Legion Protein Certified Grass Fed?
When you get your hands on a bag of Legion Protein, you will not see any badges or certifications. You will only see a list of what Legion Protein offers in each bag and that each bag is “grass-fed whey protein isolate.”
However, when you visit TrulyFamilyFarms and the Legion website, Legion Protein Powder is certified as Truly Grass Fed and AWA.
My research indicates that Legion Whey+ Protein is certified as Truly Grass-Fed and AWA. Legion Protein Powder meets the highest threshold for grass-fed whey and animal wellness and treatment. Legion uses whey from cows that are not injected with hormones and has access to open pastures.
📜 Is Legion Protein Powder Third Party Tested?
You will not find the typical Informed Sport or Informed Choice badges certifying that Legion protein powders do not have illegal or banned substances. Legion went one step further.
Legion Protein Powder is a third-party product tested by Labdoor. Labdoor examined everything: amino spiking, banned and illegal substances, and a toxicology report. Here’s the link for the complete 3rd party Labdoor report.
🥇 What is the Best Grass Fed Protein Powder
Legion Athletics Whey Protein is certified with Truly Grass Fed and AWA. Let’s compare Legion Athletics Whey Protein with two other known Truly Grass Fed and AWA protein powders.
If the flavor doesn’t matter, you’re best going with AGN Roots. At $1.49 per serving, AGN Roots offers the best value, plus it has a high amount of Leucine per serving, at 3.05 grams.
However, if you want flavor in your protein, it’s a neck-and-neck between Legion Athletics Whey Protein and Earth Fed Muscle. If you’re a fan of a specific flavor, you already know where your allegiance lies.
Objectively speaking, looking at the leucine and total BCAA counts between Legion Whey and Earth Fed Muscle. Earth Fed Muscle is the superior protein.
Brand | Leucine (g) | Isoleucine (g) | Valine (g) | Total BCAA (g) | Serving Size (g) | Protein per serving (g) | Price per 30 serving | Price per Serving | Protein Origin |
Legion Athletics Whey Protein | 2.613 | 1.667 | 1.3 | 5.6 | 26.4 | 22 | $59.99 | $2.00 | Ireland |
AGN Roots | 3.05 | 1.94 | 1.54 | 6.5 | 29 | 25 | $69.99 (47 serving) | $1.49 | Ireland |
Earth Fed Muscle | 3.18 | 2.03 | 1.61 | 6.8 | 30 | 27 | $59.99 | $2.00 | Ireland |

✅🌱Certified Grass Fed Whey
If you’re looking for certified grass-fed whey proteins, I have some reviews to keep you entertained (and informed). As you already know, there are many “claimed” grass-fed protein powders, but the majority are not certified by an independent 3rd party. The list below is certified by USDA Organic (minimum) to Truly Grass Fed (highest).
I have three future grass-fed protein powders in the works: Onnit Whey Isolate Grass-fed Protein, Poliquin Whey Stronger, and Swolverine Grass-fed Whey Isolate.
If you have a certified grass-fed protein powder you want me to review, please leave a comment or email me at my ‘Contact’ page.
🔍 Is Legion Grass Fed Whey Protein Worth It
I firmly believe that Legion Grass-Fed Whey Protein is a high-quality protein powder, especially when you are looking for third-party testing, a toxicology report, and certified grass-fed protein powder focusing on animal awareness.
Based on my research, Legion Grass Fed Whey Protein is a great choice when isolated. However, compared to other Truly Grass Fed and AWA-certified products, Legion Grass Fed Whey comes in 3rd place.
I’m not saying Legion Grass Fed Whey is a poor choice. I’m sharing that there may be better choices when compared to other protein powders in the same category of certifications. The final thing to consider is flavor. There is no denying that Legion Grass Fed Whey offers 16 flavors, almost double what Earth Fed Muscle offers.
Amino Spiking: 10 out of 10. 3rd party certified for amino spiking, complete protein per serving, and a toxicology report. Official and certified grass-fed and animal welfare awareness is secured. My only knock on Legion Grass Fed Whey? Compared to protein powders in the same certification category, it’s in 3rd place.
🥤 What’s The Best Way To Mix Legion Whey Powder?
Legion suggests the best way to mix Legion Whey Powder is to use 8 to 10 ounces of water, milk, or your favorite beverage.
As always, my emphasis for any of my unbiased reviews is post-workout nutrition. I always use my shaker. And using a shaker, I was left disappointed. Dry cake bits on the shaker walls are noticeable underneath the pour spout.
⚖️ Does Legion Whey+ Whey Protein Powder Come With A Scoop?
Legion+ Whey Protein Powder does come with a scoop.
Shakability Test: 8.5 out of 10. Based on the price point, I expected more from Legion+ Whey Protein Powder. It would be an easier shake than AGN Roots and Earth Fed Muscle, but more elbow grease was needed.
🍰📋 Legion Whey Protein Ingredients: Birthday Cake
Here is the ingredient list for Legion Whey Protein’s birthday cake. I’ll refer to the end of this section; not all flavors offer 100% all-natural ingredients. Maltodextrin is a corn-derived sweetener, so corn is natural. However, is it more natural than monk fruit?
Ingredient | Description |
Non-GMO Whey Protein Isolate | High-quality protein derived from milk, with non-GMO certification. |
Non-GMO Maltodextrin | A carbohydrate derived from corn, used as a filler and thickener. |
Sunflower Creamer | A plant-based creamer made from sunflower oil. |
Natural Flavor | Flavoring is derived from natural sources to mimic the taste of birthday cake. |
Xanthan Gum | A natural thickening and stabilizing agent. |
Sunflower Lecithin | An emulsifier derived from sunflower seeds. |
Sea Salt Topping | Pure sea salt is used as a topping to enhance flavor. |
Stevia (Stevia rebaudiana) Leaf Extract | A natural sweetener derived from the leaves of the Stevia plant. |
A couple of things to note. I’m surprised Legion went with maltodextrin. Legion Athletics Whey Protein offers all-natural ingredients. I believe “natural ingredients” means no artificial sweeteners and all 100% all-natural. Technically, maltodextrin is not a natural sweetener. Why go out with the advertised “natural ingredients” and add maltodextrin?
My other annoyance is always stevia. I’m not a fan, primarily when used in high amounts. High amounts of stevia yield a medicinal, too-sweet taste.
Of course, your mileage will vary depending on the flavor you select. As I hint at later in this Legion Protein Powder review, if you want the least amount of ingredients, always go with unflavored protein. Plus, selecting unflavored protein means you won’t be disappointed with stevia, ever.
🌍 Is Legion Whey Isolate Made in the USA?
Everything about Legion Whey Isolate is appropriately labeled and shared for ingredients and sourcing. In bold font, “Whey+ is a 100% natural whey isolate protein powder made with exceptionally high-quality milk from small, sustainable dairy farms in Ireland.”
Ingredients List: 9 out of 10. The ingredient profile will vary depending on the flavor you select. However, if the marketing campaign for Legion Athletics Whey Protein is “100% natural ingredients.” All ingredient profiles should follow suit. Non-GMO maltodextrin? Come on.

🍨 Is Legion Protein Lactose Free?
Legion Protein is cold-filtered. What that means to you is that Legion Protein is very low in lactose but high in nutrients. Higher than the standard-fare protein powders found in brick-and-mortar stores.
I did not experience any significant GI issues drinking Legion Protein. I only experienced mild bloating.
🍞🚫 Is Legion Protein Powder Gluten Free?
Legion Protein Powder is advertised as a gluten-free formulation of protein powder. However, an allergen warning states that Legion Protein Powder is produced in a facility with other contaminating products: milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, soybeans, and wheat.
Nutrition Facts: 7.0 out of 10. Legion Protein Powder is a heavy hitter for flavors. However, when selecting a grass-fed Irish whey protein, you expect more from the protein offered per serving. Especially when compared to protein powders in the same category.
🎂 Legion Whey Protein Birthday Cake: Does it Taste Good?
I love a good birthday cake. However, achieving the right tones and flavors in protein powder form is difficult.
My rule of thumb is simple: when I see a birthday cake picture, I expect a delightful experience. Picture a moist, fluffy yellow cake topped with a rich, creamy white frosting. Add some colorful sprinkles for a fun, festive touch. Yes, now you’re imagining that perfect birthday cake!
If you blindfolded me, I could tell what Legion was attempting. It was an admirable attempt. My issue is the borderline sweet medicinal taste due to the stevia used. As I shared, it’s a commendable attempt. Would I buy another bag of birthday cake from Legion Whey Protein? No.
⭐️ Amazon and Legion Whey+ Review
As you know, Amazon is my go-to place to purchase protein powder. As of the date of this writing, Legion Whey has a 4.3 out of 5-star review rating based on 5,280 reviews.
Here is the recurring theme for Legion Whey+ and Amazon reviewers: it’s too sweet. Amazon Reviewers shared the time and research they spent selecting a high-quality protein powder. The #1 and only issue is how sweet Legion Whey+ tastes.
As I shared in the previous section, the overly sweet, medicinal taste was a little past tolerable. However, I wouldn’t purchase another bag of birthday cake.
Here is the majority of positive reviews shared by Amazon Reviewers who wrote
- Ease of mixing
- Certified and verified grass-fed protein from Ireland
- Hormone and antibiotic-free, non-GMO, and no artificial sweeteners (for most flavors)
- Minimally processed
🍫🍓🍦Legion Whey Best Flavor
Most Amazon Reviewers went wild for all the flavors offered by Legion Whey. However, these three are commonly suited as “can’t miss.”
- Chocolate
- Vanilla
- Tie between salted caramel and birthday cake
As I shared in my Legion Protein review of Birthday Cake, it was an admirable attempt. However, the stevia made it overly sweet.
Flavor: 8.0 out of 10. This might be the best attempt at a Birthday Cake flavor for a protein powder. However, it might be one-and-done if your taste buds are sensitive to stevia. As shared, I can finish a Legion Whey birthday cake bag, but I wouldn’t repurchase it.
🏁 Legion Protein Review – Final Thoughts
There is a lot to love about Legion Whey Isolate. Read Legion’s website description and get your hands on a bag. The price paid and the quality you are receiving are fantastic.
- 3rd party certified for protein banned substances, and full toxicology report
- Robust flavor offering of 16 flavors
- No artificial flavors, fillers, or sweeteners
- Certified by Truly Grass Fed and AWA
However, some things could be improved with Legion Whey Isolate.
- Not all flavors offer 100% natural ingredients.
- The BCAA and leucine content is lower than similar and certified protein powders.
- The amount of stevia may be too much for some.
Let’s ask and answer one last question and end this Legion Protein review.
🤔 Is Legion Protein Powder Good?
There is a lot to like about Legion Whey+ Protein Powder. If you’re looking for a certified grass-fed protein powder offering the highest certification for grass-fed, Truly Grass Fed. Legion Whey+ Protein Powder is one of the few great choices available.
Once you pass the certification process, you must examine the BCAA and leucine content of all the similar Truly Grass Fed protein powders in the market. Unfortunately, Legion Whey+ Protein Powder is in 3rd place compared to AGN Roots and Earth Fed Muscle.
However, if you’re looking for a smattering of flavor choices, Legion Whey+ Protein Powder may be the way to go. Legion Whey+ Protein Powder blows Earth Fed Muscle out of the water for flavor choices.
Due to my taste preference, Earth Fed Muscle uses less stevia. In turn, Earth Fed Muscle protein powders hit that “I can taste the stevia, but it’s still enjoyable” flavor tones.
Legion Whey+ Protein Powder is a great choice, and it comes down to flavor preference. However, Legion Whey+ Protein Powder is like a BMW i8. It has the looks and feel of a sports car but doesn’t have the horses to compete with real muscle on the road.
